Senior Product Engineer - Production
Ultrahuman
Job Description
As the Senior Product Engineer â Production, you will be the technical lynchpin between our cutting-edge hardware designs and the factory floor. Think of this role as designing the digital nervous system of our production line â ensuring every machine, sensor, and station communicates and operates flawlessly. Youâll harness first-principles thinking to develop production systems akin to how advanced factories at Tesla or Apple operate but tailored to Ultrahumanâs unique product suite. Your work will directly influence how fast we iterate, how efficiently we manufacture, and how consistently we deliver world-class quality.
Responsibilities:
⢠Manufacturing Systems Development: Design and implement software and control systems that power our production lines. This could involve developing a custom Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or tailoring existing ones to fit Ultrahumanâs processes (assembly of smart rings, CGM devices, etc.), enabling real-time tracking of production status, yields, and equipment performance.
⢠Automation & Integration: Identify opportunities to automate manual processes on the line. Write software to integrate robotics, automated test equipment, or IoT sensors into a cohesive production workflow. Ensure that machines and software speak to each other â for instance, a test station should automatically log results to a central database and flag any anomalies.
⢠Production Data Analytics: Implement data collection pipelines from the production process â every solder joint, calibration reading, and test result â and build dashboards or alerts. Use this data to help operations pinpoint bottlenecks or emerging issues (e.g., a rise in failure rate at one station) and work on software fixes or process tweaks to resolve them.
⢠Collaboration with Hardware Teams: Work hand-in-hand with hardware design and manufacturing engineering teams. When a new product design is ready, youâll guide how to set up the production line for it: what new software tools are needed, how to update firmware loaders or calibration software, etc. If a hardware change occurs, youâll adapt the production software to accommodate it.
⢠Continuous Improvement: Apply first-principles thinking to regularly re-evaluate our production processes. If building a device typically takes X steps, ask âwhyâ relentlessly and see if any steps can be combined, simplified, or improved via software. Lead projects to implement these improvements, resulting in faster throughput or higher quality.
Requirements
⢠Educational Background: Bachelorâs or Masterâs in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field. Strong foundation in software development; additional familiarity with industrial engineering is a plus.
⢠Experience: 5+ years in a software engineering role, with at least a couple of years focused on manufacturing or industrial systems (e.g., factory automation, IoT platforms, MES development). Experience in consumer electronics or automotive manufacturing environments is highly valued.
⢠Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming (Python, C++/C# for interfacing with hardware, or other relevant languages). Experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, or IoT frameworks is a plus. Familiarity with databases and data visualization for logging production data.
⢠Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to solve real-world problems on a factory floor using technology. For example, having built a tool to reduce error rates or implementing an alert system that prevented downtime.
⢠Communication: Strong ability to translate between software and operations. Comfortable creating documentation and training production staff on new digital tools or systems you introduce.
Preferred Experience:
⢠Lean/Automation Projects: Experience implementing Lean manufacturing principles or automation projects (robotics, machine vision, etc.) and integrating them with software systems.
⢠Hardware Understanding: Good grasp of hardware development cycles and testing. Perhaps youâve worked closely with EE or ME teams before, which helps you foresee production challenges from the design stage.
⢠End-to-End Project Leadership: Proven track record of taking a production-related software project from concept to deployment in a live factory environment.
⢠Innovative Mindset: A passion for rethinking traditional manufacturing. Maybe youâve prototyped unique solutions like using computer vision to inspect parts or built simulation models to optimize workflows.
