Job Description

The unboxing of an Ultrahuman product is the first tactile experience our customers have with our brand – and as Head – Packaging Design, you will ensure that experience is nothing short of extraordinary. This role goes beyond making a pretty box; it’s about engineering an extension of our product that protects, delights, and speaks to our ethos of quality and innovation. From the sleekness of Apple’s device boxes to the sustainable and secure packaging solutions of Dyson, you’ll draw inspiration and break new ground using first principles. How can packaging be lighter yet stronger? More eco-friendly yet premium? How can it reflect the deep engineering inside the product while being visually stunning outside? You will tackle these questions while leading the end-to-end packaging strategy for all Ultrahuman products, collaborating with design, engineering, and operations to deliver a holistic product experience.

Responsibilities:

• Packaging Strategy & Vision: Define the overall strategy for Ultrahuman’s product packaging across our lineup (smart rings, monitors, any future devices). Establish guidelines that align with our brand values: premium quality, minimalist design, sustainability, and robustness. Your vision ensures an Ultrahuman box is immediately recognizable and sets anticipation for the innovation inside.

• Design & Development: Lead the packaging design for new products and iterations of existing ones. This includes conceptualizing structural design (inserts, compartments, protection for the device) and visual design (graphics, instructions layout, external branding). Use first-principles thinking to reimagine conventional packaging – for instance, explore advanced materials (biodegradable plastics, molded pulp, innovative polymers) that could reduce weight or environmental impact while still safeguarding the product.

• Prototyping & Testing: Develop prototypes of packaging and rigorously test them. Simulate shipping conditions: drop tests, vibration tests, climate tests (heat, humidity) to ensure the packaging can withstand global logistics and still deliver a pristine product. Iterate on designs based on test results – if a certain corner tends to crumple under pressure, reinforce or redesign it. Ensure the unboxing experience remains intuitive and frustration-free (no wrap rage, easy to open yet secure).

• Collaboration with Manufacturing & Supply Chain: Work with packaging suppliers and our own manufacturing teams to refine designs for mass production. Optimize packaging dimensions to reduce freight costs (shipping compacts), decide on pack-out configurations (how many units per carton, etc.), and select the best vendors for materials printing and fabrication. Ensure quality control processes are in place for packaging production, so every box is consistent in look and performance.

• Team Leadership & Project Management: Lead a small team of packaging designers or coordinators. Also coordinate with external agencies or freelance designers if needed for graphic elements or special projects. Manage project timelines to align with product launches – packaging must be ready in sync with hardware. Keep an eye on cost without sacrificing quality: innovatively achieve a premium feel within budget targets, making data-driven decisions on where to invest (e.g., a magnetic closure vs. a standard one, based on the value it adds).

Requirements

• Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s in Packaging Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering (with packaging focus), or related field. Formal training in packaging engineering or design is highly valuable.

• Experience: 8+ years in packaging design/engineering roles, with experience leading packaging for consumer electronics or similarly high-end products. You should have taken multiple products’ packaging from concept to shelf.

• Design Skills: Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software for packaging (e.g., SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD) and graphic design tools (Adobe Illustrator/InDesign) for 2D artwork. A keen eye for aesthetics and detail.

• Engineering/Material Knowledge: Deep understanding of packaging materials (corrugate, foams, plastics, coatings, adhesives) and their properties. Experience with sustainable materials and keeping up to date with eco-friendly packaging trends and regulations (like EU packaging directives, recycling standards).

• Creative Problem Solver: Ability to balance conflicting requirements – for instance, creating a luxurious unboxing moment while also being eco-conscious and cost-effective. A portfolio or examples of past work that show innovative solutions (patents in packaging, awards, or just clever designs) will strengthen your candidacy.

Preferred Experience:

• Consumer Electronics Packaging: Specific experience with small form-factor electronics or gadgets (phones, wearables, etc.) packaging will be a major plus, as you’ll be familiar with requirements like static protection, presentation of device, etc.

• Global Mindset: Understanding of packaging compliance and needs for different markets (e.g., multilingual labeling requirements, handling of manuals, varying environmental regulations).

• Supplier Network: Existing relationships with packaging suppliers, material vendors, or printing houses could speed up development. Experience working with factories in Asia or elsewhere for packaging manufacturing.

• Project Highlights: We’d love to hear about a packaging project you’re proud of – perhaps you drastically reduced unboxing time, or you achieved 100% recyclable packaging for a complex product, or you designed a package that itself became a keepsake. These examples will illustrate your passion and capability to innovate.
